Tudor History

Founded in 1926 by Rolex’s co-founder Hans Wilsdorf, Tudor emerged as a sister brand with its own identity. Wilsdorf's goal was to create timepieces that combined the reliability and precision of Rolex with a more accessible price point. This led to the birth of Tudor watches, which quickly gained recognition for their dependable build quality and timeless designs.

Over the decades, Tudor watches have evolved to meet the changing demands of the watch industry and the preferences of discerning watch enthusiasts. The brand has consistently pushed boundaries, introducing innovative features and designs that sets it apart from its Swiss rivals, as well as its famous sibling.

Throughout its rich history, Tudor has achieved several notable brand milestones. In 1952, it unveiled the Tudor Oyster Prince, its first-ever waterproof watch. Five years later, it introduced the Advisor, a watch with a built-in alarm—to this day, a function not found on any Rolex watch. In the 1970s, Tudor began supplying the French Navy with its dive models, further cementing the brand's credibility in the field of professional diving watches.

After the quartz crisis of the 1970s and 80s, Tudor’s visibility dwindled as Rolex seemed to discard it as a brand of value. It even withdrew from the UK and US markets, before a brand reboot in 2007 revived its fortunes. The introduction of the Tudor Heritage collection in 2010 paid tribute to the brand's iconic models from the past while incorporating modern elements. And then came the first of many Black Bay models. These now dominate the Tudor line-up and have been phenomenally successful.

The celebrated Black Bay collection pays tribute to Tudor's rich diving heritage. These watches feature robust construction, water resistance, and iconic design elements inspired by vintage Tudor Submariners. Some models, like the Black Bay Pro, even take design cues from much-loved vintage Rolex models like the Explorer II.

The Tudor Pelagos collection is designed for professional divers and is known for its exceptional water resistance and functionality. These watches are equipped with helium escape valves, ceramic bezels and chunky luminescent markers for optimal underwater visibility. Tudor has also proved its willingness to experiment with high-tech materials, sometimes using titanium and carbon for its watch cases.

The Heritage collection draws inspiration from Tudor's past, offering modern reinterpretations of classic designs. These watches combine vintage aesthetics with contemporary technology, making them perfect for watch enthusiasts who appreciate a touch of nostalgia. The 1926 collection meanwhile offers a range of dressier, more elegant options, if the larger sports watches are not to your taste.

Today, Tudor watches continue to captivate enthusiasts worldwide, helped along by campaigns led by high-profile brand ambassadors including David Beckham and the New Zealand rugby union team.
